Basilica Santa Maria del Carmine - Florence

(Sat Jul 17th, 2010, by Daniele Davide)

When You book a guided tour in Florence, with us You'll realize how beautiful and magic this town is. The church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence overlooks the homonymous square in the neighborhood Oltrarno. It is famous for hosting the frescoes in the Brancacci Chapel, fundamental work of Renaissance art, decorated by Masaccio and Masolino (and later completed by Filippino Lippi). The church dedicated to "Beata Vergine del Carmelo" was built between in 1268 as part of a Carmelite convent that still exists today. Of that time only some Romanesque-Gothic remains are still visible on the sides. The complex was expanded once in 1328, when the city granted the monks the use of the land adjacent to the fifth city walls, and then in 1464, with the addition of the chapter hall and the refectory. The work was completed in 1476. Like many other churches in Florence, it underwent some renovation works in the sixteenth and seventeenth century but it was the devastating fire of 1771, after having almost completely destroyed the interior, required a complete redesign, which were commissioned to the architects Giuseppe Ruggieri, author project, and Julius Mannaioni, the site manager. It was completed, apart from the facade, between 1775 and 1782. The fire had not invested the old vestry or the Corsini chapel , nor, fortunately, the Brancacci Chapel. The façade is unfinished (like other major Florentine churches) and has a high and rough grinding stone and brick.
